A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study on the Appendage Morphology of Astacus leptodactylus (Eschscholtz, 1823) and Pacifastacus leniusculus (Daña, 1852) (Crustácea:Decapoda: Astacoidea) International Journal of Morphology
Mustafa Harlioglu,Muzaffer.
This study compares the morphology of rostrum, pereipods 1,2,4 and mouthparts of juvenile Astacus leptodactylus with those oí Pacifastacus leniusculus. Differences in morphology were observed, in particular with regard to the mouthparts e.g. including setal armature and number of teeth on the mandible. In general, the shape of the rostra in the two species is similar in that both taper to a point with a pair of sharp spines distally. Laterally the rostrum of A. leptodactylus is bordered by a regular row of setae, which is not so well defined in P leniusculus. The observations also showed that in addition to an increase in size, changes in morphology in the feeding apparatus between the developmental stages of the two species were present. It was concluded...

Developmental morphology of mouthparts and foregut of the larvae and postlarvae of Lepidophthalmus siriboia Felder & Rodrigues, 1993 (Decapoda: Callianassidae) Acta Amazonica
Abrunhosa,Fernando; Melo,Marlon; Lima,Jô de Farias; Abrunhosa,Jacqueline.
In this study, the gross morphology of the mouthparts and foregut of the ghost shrimp Lepidophthalmus siriboia were investigated from larvae and postlarvae reared in the laboratory. The mouthparts (maxillae and maxillipeds) of the zoeae have a reduced number of setae and spines (or is absent in some individuals), and the foregut, under developed, have few minute setae in the cardiac and pyloric chambers. In contrast, after the metamorphosis into megalopa stage, all feeding appendages have many setae and, the foregut shows a well-developed gastric mill with strong lateral teeth. In the juvenile stage occurs an increase of setae and spines in the mouthparts and the foregut becomes more specialized. These observations strongly suggest that a lecithotrophic...

Morphology of three Brazilian species of Semiotus (Coleoptera, Elateridae, Semiotinae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Parreira,Maria Helena; Casari,Sônia A..
The morphology of Semiotus distinctus (Herbst, 1806), S. intermedius (Herbst, 1806) and S. ligneus (Linnaeus, 1767), including mouthparts and male and female genitalia, is described and illustrated. A comparative analysis of the characters related to the external morphology, mouthparts and male and female genitalia is also included.

Mouthparts and associated sensilla of a South American moth, Synempora andesae (Lepidoptera: Neopseustidae) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Faucheux,Michel J..
The mouthparts of Synempora andesae Davis & Nielsen were studied by means of scanning electron microscope. The existence of gustative uniporous sensilla styloconica is demonstrated for the second time on the proboscis of Neopseustidae. It is with this family, and not at a later stage within the Incurvaroidea, that these sensilla appear during the evolution of Lepidoptera. Contrary to common belief, the labial-palp-pit organ, or organ of vom Rath, is present at the distal extremity of the labial palpi of S. andesae. It is made up of a dozen of grooved multiporous sensilla coeloconica whose function is carbon dioxide sensitive. Thus, its presumed absence can no longer be considered as an autapomorphy of Neopseustidae. S. andesae possesses other...

New species of Dilobitarsus Latreille with tetra-tuberculated pronotum (Coleoptera, Elateridae, Agrypninae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Casari,Sônia A..
New species of Dilobitarsus Latreille with tetra-tuberculated pronotum (Coleoptera, Elateridae, Agrypninae). Four species of Dilobitarsus Latreille, 1834, D. angulosus sp. nov. (Brazil: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro), D. bellus sp. nov. (Peru), D. nigrus sp. nov. (Argentina) and D. thoraconstrictus sp. nov. (Bolivia) are described, and D. quadrituberculatus Candèze, 1857 is redescribed. Diagnostic characters of all studied species are illustrated and new records for D. quadrituberculatus are included. A key to Dilobitarsus species from the Neotropical Region is also presented.

Ontogenesis and functional morphology of the digestive system of the freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium amazonicum (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Queiroz,Luciano D.; Abrunhosa,Fernando A.; Maciel,Cristiana R..
The appropriate feeding regime for larvae and post-larvae of crustacean decapods is essential for successful larval culture. Reports on the development and morphology of the mouthparts and foregut of these crustaceans have aided in the selection of appropriate larval foodstuffs and consequently increased larval survival and growth rate during development. In the present study, the functional morphology of foregut and mouthparts was investigated in larvae and post-larvae of the freshwater prawn M. amazonicum (Heller, 1862). From observations gathered on both the outer and inner feeding apparati the first stage larvae have obligatory lecithotrophy and feeding behaviour is initiated after molting to the second stage. The foregut of the larvae undergoes...

The morphology of Epilohmannia zwarti spec. nov., an Oribatid mite from New Guinea Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A detailed description is given of a new species of the genus Epilohmannia Berlese (Oribatida) from New Guinea. The relationships of the species are discussed. The mouthparts, characterized by the fusion of the epimera of the segments of palp and leg I, are compared with those of the Palpigradi (in which group these epimera have also fused).
